CBD and CBG are both cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, but they have unique properties and benefits. CBD is the most popular cannabinoid, but CBG is gaining popularity for its therapeutic potential. CBG has been demonstrated to be equally as efficient in lowering inflammation and discomfort as CBD.
So, which is best for you? Continue reading for more information on each of these cannabinoids and their potential benefits. You can also visit our retail location in San Antonio, where our knowledgeable staff are ready to assist you with information and product selection for your specific needs.
What is CBG
CBG is an abbreviation for cannabigerol, one of over 100 cannabinoids present in cannabis plants. CBG is often called “the mother of all cannabinoids” because it forms new cannabinoids as it matures. CBG begins as CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) in young hemp plants. CBGA converts into cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) as the plant grows. These two chemicals are then combined to produce CBD and THC. Any remaining CBGA is transformed to CBG as the plant matures.
Despite the fact that CBG was initially identified in 1964, the cannabinoid received little attention, prompting little research into the substance. Modern research is still in its early phases, but based on what we know so far, CBG may have a variety of therapeutic effects.
CBG may have substantial pain-relieving qualities that are more effective than THC. CBG may also interact with the endocannabinoid system’s CB1 and CB2 receptors, which impact inflammation, pain, and even heat sensitivity. CBG may also have antidepressant, anticancer, and antibacterial properties.
What is CBD
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is found in high concentrations in cannabis plants. CBD was originally identified in the 1930s but was mostly ignored until the 1970s, when scientists discovered it may be an effective anti-convulsant. CBD, like CBG, binds to the CB1 and CB2 receptors found in the body’s central nervous system and immune system.
Many of the medicinal effects of CBD have been validated by studies, including anti-anxiety, pain-relieving, anti-nausea, and sedative properties. CBD has also been demonstrated to be an effective therapy for severe infantile epilepsy, and it is utilized in the FDA-approved medicine Epidiolex.
CBD has been the cannabinoid of choice in recent years, not only because of the noted medicinal benefits but also because it does not produce the “high” that is commonly associated with another well-known cannabinoid, THC. CBD, as opposed to THC, provides pain relief and other advantages without the danger of paranoia, anxiety, or decreased cognitive function. You can find out more about CBD here.
Differences between CBG vs CBD
CBG and CBD are both cannabinoids, compounds found in cannabis plants. They both offer potential health benefits, but there are some key differences between the two.
CBG is a non-intoxicating compound, while CBD can produce mild psychoactive effects – not enough to make a user feel “high”, but it does offer calming and relaxing properties. So while CBG won’t make you feel “high” like THC does, it may still offer some of the same medicinal benefits.
CBG and CBD also work in a unique way to activate receptors in the body. One research study investigated the interactions of CBG and CBD with the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor. CBG operates as an antagonist at that receptor, but CBD exhibits potent anti-nausea effects, indicating that it functions as an agonist.
Even though the two cannabinoids are identical, when attached to the same receptor, they have opposite effects.
Additionally, CBG is thought to be more effective at treating certain conditions than CBD. For example, studies have shown that CBG is more effective at reducing inflammation than CBD. And while more research is needed, some preliminary studies suggest that CBG may also be helpful in treating conditions like glaucoma and Huntington’s disease.
Finally, it’s important to note that CBG is a fairly rare compound. In fact, it’s estimated that CBG only makes up about 1% of all the cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. This means that it can be difficult to find products that contain high levels of CBG.
Benefits of CBG vs CBD
Preclinical research provides some insight into how cannabis may interact with the body. CBG, like CBD, has no psychotropic effects. Instead, it provides additional therapeutic advantages such as:
- Appetite stimulation
- Antibacterial properties
- Cancer-fighting qualities
- Potential treatment for MRSA bacterial infections
There has been considerably more research on CBD completed. CBD has been shown in studies to have a variety of medicinal advantages, including:
- Chronic pain relief
- Improved sleep quality
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Neuroprotective characteristics
As interest in CBG grows, we expect to learn more about this cannabinoid in the next few years. More clinical trials and research are being funded in order to have a deeper grasp of the benefits that CBG provides as well as future product innovation.
